British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
